New York….New York

New York….New York….I had never been to New York City so for my birthday it was one of the places that I had wanted to go. I must say what an experience. So, today I thought I give you a glimpse of what it is like in the Big City.

So let the adventure begin….

New York City is kind of like going to a whole different world I like to call it a “concrete jungle”. There are buildings everywhere and very, very tall ones I might add. It makes you feel so small in such an amazing place.

One of the things that I love about New York City is that you can be in the city viewing all of the magnificent buildings. But you can also view it from a distance. I took a ferry ride to see the outskirts of the city and I must say it was fun and cool to be able to see all of the buildings at once.

Aw! Look at this view!!

When I think of New York I think of the place where those who have gone before us in the United States of America fought for our freedom. Ellis Island. A memorial for those who gave their lives so that in this day we might live in freedom. So thankful for those who gave up their lives for the righteous cause of freedom.

Underneath George Washington’s bridge there is a little red lighthouse. It is a special little lighthouse that was built in 1921. When George Washington’s bridge was completed in 1931 those overseeing the building of the bridge thought that they should remove the little lighthouse as there was no more use for it. But, there was a children’s book that had been published called the little red lighthouse and the grey bridge. And when the children and the adults found out that they were intending to remove the lighthouse they were really upset. In the end the overseers chose to keep the little red lighthouse. And I am glad they did.

One of the most inspiring buildings that you will find in New York is called the Freedom building. Dedicated to the 9/11 victims and families who had lost their lives on that terrible day. My heart still goes out to those who lost their loved ones and remembers the courage of the brave men and women who were involved with rescuing victims who were still alive. And the many firefighters who spent so much time cleaning up the wreckage and searched for those who were under the rubble of the buildings that had been destroyed. It was so moving watching true Americans step up and help one another. Such a tragic time and yet it reminds me of the resilience of Americans and their generosity in helping their neighbor in time of need.

Another place that is so unique in New York City is Central Park. It is 2.5 miles in length and 0.5 mile in width. Because I was there in the fall the trees were turning color adding to the beauty of the park. And yet, you could still see the buildings in the city surrounding it. It is such a unique place and worth seeing.
